Durable Water Repellent (DWR) is a special treatment applied to most GORE-TEX Products. In addition to the membrane, which makes the fabric waterproof, windproof and breathable, the DWR adds an important comfort aspect by preventing a clammy feeling.
We’ve developed a unique PFAS-free* DWR treatment that offers the highest levels of performance with a lower chemical footprint.
* Made without intentionally added per- and polyfluorinated substances; may contain trace amounts.
How it Works
DWR forms an ultra-thin layer on the face textile’s surface, reducing surface energy so water rolls off rather than soaking in.
Why It’s Important
Without DWR, the textile surface loses its water-beading ability. The membrane will still ensure the waterproofness of the garment, but the garments can feel cold and clammy when water saturates the outer layer.
When Do You Need to Reactive or ReApply DWR?
DWR isn’t permanent. When water stops beading, that means the DWR isn’t functioning correctly and needs to be either reactivated via the wash and heat process or reapplied with a pump-spray or wash-in product. Your GORE TEX Product will still be waterproof, but you may not feel the comfort you would normally expect.
PFAS-free* DWR works better with regular care as it is less resistant to oils and requires more regular maintenance. GORE-TEX Products are engineered for durability, so there’s no need to worry about washing them regularly—in fact, it’s essential to keep them performing at their best!
* Made without intentionally added per- and polyfluorinated substances; may contain trace amounts.
Reactivating DWR is easy—simply wash and dry your gear, then apply heat to complete the process. And when the DWR can‘t be re-activated via the wash and heat process, it’s time to re-energize the DWR using a pump-spray or wash-in product.
